ABOUT

Parents Left Behind – The Estrangement Effect What do you do with your heart when your adult child refuses contact? How do you navigate holidays and milestones when the memories you cherish are tied to children who no longer share those moments with you? How do you redefine your identity as a parent when that role is no longer part of your daily life? Adult‑child estrangement occurs when grown children intentionally distance themselves—emotionally, physically, or both—from one or both parents. This distancing may involve limited communication or a complete cutoff, often referred to as “going no‑contact.” While separation can feel abrupt to parents, research shows it is usually the result of long-standing relational patterns, unresolved conflict, or a need for emotional safety and autonomy. What appears sudden is often the culmination of years of tension, unmet needs, or differing expectations around boundaries and roles. For parents, the experience is often profoundly painful and disorienting. Many struggle to understand the reasons behind the estrangement, especially when explanations are sparse or communication ends abruptly. The loss is ambiguous; there is no clear ending, yet the relationship is fundamentally altered. Families facing this reality often move through grief, reflection, and a search for meaning as they try to make sense of a bond that has changed so dramatically. Led by Sharon Ryan, a certified Life Coach, this four-week series offers a space to begin moving forward while honoring the past. Through guided conversations with other women who share similar experiences, you’ll explore your feelings, gain perspective, and begin discovering a life that extends beyond the role of parenting.
